Woolfest 2019

With the temperature soaring, throngs of visitors arrived at Mitchell’s Lakeland Livestock Centre in Cockermouth to visit Woolfest 2019.

Amongst the stalls of yarn, roving and wool tops are all sorts of items created from wool.
Hand felted animals, cards, buttons and items of clothing stand alongside mattresses and mattress toppers made from pure wool.

Showcasing the Herdwick.

Many of the items on sale are aimed at the home crafter but occasionally a little gem pops up which really stands out from the rest.

Herdwick sheep were farmed by our family for a few hundred years and I never thought I would see the day that the scratchy yarn, which scoured our hands could be turned into an amazingly fine, exceptional quality tweed.  However, Charlotte Chaplin of Ulverston has managed to do just that.

A selection of livestock is also on display including rare sheep breeds and some very sweet Alpaca.

Some of the stallholders are also giving demonstrations.  You can see weaving looms, spinning wheels and drop spindles in use or perhaps you may want to learn the art of wet felting or crochet.  I am sure somebody will be inspired to add a new skill to their hobbies.

Memorial Stall

Every year at Woolfest, a stall is offered to a worker in wool who has recently started in business. This is done in memory of Carolyn Rawlinson,  a co-founder of The Wool Clip and whose vision and inspiration led to Woolfest.
This year’s Memorial Stallholder is Kathryn Parry of Gull Skull Designs.
